From the Associated Press and ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports...
http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2003/0228/1515914.html

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Former major leaguer Bobby Bonds has been diagnosed with lung cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy near his home in the San Francisco Bay area, seven months after having an operation to remove a cancerous tumor from his kidney, a newspaper reported Friday.

Bonds, 56, played for the San Francisco Giants in 1968-74 and for seven other teams during a 14-season major league career, hitting 332 homers and stealing 461 bases. He had 30 homers and 30 steals in a season five times.

Bonds was recovering well from his kidney procedure, but was diagnosed with lung cancer over the winter and must undergo six months of chemotherapy, the Contra Costa Times reported. He is a former Giants coach and now is a special assistant for the team.

His son, Barry Bonds, told the newspaper Thursday that his father's weight is down to 180 pounds.

"He can't come to the ballpark. He's too weak,'' Barry Bonds said.

Barry Bonds said he will leave spring training in mid-March to return to the Bay Area to be with his father when he has another round of chemotherapy.

"Barry is always about winning. Not everyone always is. He is. That's why he takes the walks and tells us to go run when he's up, because he says, 'This game is about scoring runs and winning.

Though Bud Selig still has to make the final call, ESPN has learned that baseball's investigation of Pete Rose's tax problems and casino visits appears to suggest that neither would be a significant enough issue to prevent Selig from reinstating Rose in the next few months.

A baseball official familiar with Rose's situation also told me Tuesday that while he would "be shocked" if Rose were reinstated before Opening Day, it's possible Rose will be allowed to attend Opening Day at Cincinnati's new ballpark under certain conditions.

This perversion sucks so mightly the adjectives to accurately describe it have not yet been invented.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - No one's saying it just yet. That doesn't mean, however, that most people aren't thinking it.
But after watching David Cone pitch Thursday night at Thomas J. White Stadium, it's hard not to imagine the veteran hurler being given the keys to the fifth spot in New York's rotation. Cone threw four strong innings in the Mets' 8-2 victory over Tampa Bay, putting forth his best effort to date.

He allowed one run on three hits, struck out four, walked one and finished with a flourish, retiring the last five batters he faced. Considering how fragile the back end of New York's rotation has become with Pedro Astacio on the shelf indefinitely, it will be hard to keep Cone out of the picture if he pitches as well in his final two spring outings as he did Thursday.

"It was a good outing and I showed improvement," said Cone, 40, whose ERA this spring is 6.75. "Overall my arm strength was pretty good. I had my best velocity in the fourth inning. I had a couple of strikeouts and that was encouraging. That last inning might have been my strongest.

"With each time out, I'm legitimizing it more. Even during my last outing [in Mexico City] I felt like I made strides with my arm strength. I know I can still do this. It's just a matter of stretching my arm out and pitching enough innings to be a starter."

If Cone follows his current schedule, he will pitch Tuesday night at home against the Dodgers. He will then throw again on Mar. 30, the day before the season begins. The Mets probably won't need a start from the No. 5 spot in the rotation until April 6 against the Expos at Shea Stadium, so there would be plenty of time for Cone to continue stretching out his arm, whether he does it with the club or stays down in Port St. Lucie for a few extra days.

"Right now I think he can still pitch in the Major Leagues," catcher Mike Piazza said. "We still have some time left but his velocity was there, he was sharp and his breaking ball had good snap. I don't know exactly what his role would be but his presence here has been a positive. I think that in and of itself is important."

Manager Art Howe and general manager Steve Phillips still haven't made Cone aware of any decisions they may have made so he's still working under the assumption that he has something to prove. Howe was impressed with Cone's effort but remained non-committal.

"I haven't had time to talk to them," said Cone, who threw 63 pitches. "In five days, I'll try to go five innings and continue to get stronger. At the end of spring, I'll sit down and talk with them.

"I made a big stride tonight but I still feel like I have more to prove. I know that's why they gave me a legitimate look. That's why they sent [Steve] Trachsel to pitch in a minor league game today. They wouldn't be giving me these innings if they weren't giving me a serious look. That's more than I asked for. They've showed a lot of patience and let me stay in a starter's routine."

It's looking more and more like a fifth starter's routine.

Mets notes: Cone heads 'home'

NEW YORK -- David Cone inched his way closer to "home" Thursday morning, going through a light workout at Brooklyn's KeySpan Park. The veteran right-hander will move one borough over Friday night when he makes his return to the Major Leagues and his return to the Mets, starting for New York in its series opener against Montreal.
It will mark Cone's first appearance as a Met since Aug. 23, 1992 and his first appearance as a Met at Shea since Aug. 12, 1992. Cone last pitched in Queens on July 13, 2001, throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings to earn a victory in Boston's 3-1 decision over New York.

"I'm getting the chance to end my career in New York, where it started," Cone said. "I'm thrilled to have the chance one more time. It's all been kind of unexpected. Here you find yourself with one more chance to come out to Shea one more time.

"I went through a light workout this morning and played catch. It was good to put the uniform on again, play catch and cut the edge for tomorrow."

The edge will still be sharp Friday evening, though, and all the working out beforehand may not prepare him. Cone should expect a hero's welcome when he is announced before the game and when he walks to the mound. Though he admits his adrenaline level will be high, Cone says he will be able to keep his emotions in check.

"I've been through a lot of big games," said Cone, who has received several calls wishing him well, including one from his former Yankee teammate, David Wells. "So I should be OK. I'm just hoping for a good first inning, a quick start. You always want to have a quick start and hope that leads to a good night and we win the game.

"I really haven't allowed myself to think about it. I'm sure it will be a great feeling warming up. But I still have to do my part and pitch well. The reception would be tremendous but no one wants to see an old pitcher go out there and struggle."

Temperatures are expected to be in the 40s by game time Friday and there's a good chance it will be raining at some point in the evening. Manager Art Howe said that wouldn't matter, though. Cone is his man.

"David's going tomorrow, come hell or high water," Howe said.

Howe is hoping Cone, who will wear No. 16, can go six innings and throw between 90 and 100 pitches. He threw 93 pitches in a minor league game Sunday and felt strong afterward. He also said he watched the Expos on television this week and remembers many of them from when he tossed a perfect game against Montreal in 1999.

"I'm hoping I can go out there every five days and be effective," Cone said. "I've been surprised and encouraged by how things have gone. I'm only going to get stronger as the season goes on. I've been surprised with how sharp my breaking stuff has been and that's saved me."

Ah...does an old warhorse proud! ;D

I would just like to thank the Mets for dropping the first two games of the season to the Cubs. Unfortunately Sosa didn't get number 500 in NY. Oh well, on to Cincy.

I am currently an usher for the infamous Minor League team the Staten Island Yankees (the AAA minor league team of the NY Yankees) & from my experience I favor the SI Yanks all the way because they work hard, try to make it to the big leagues, and play for love of the game.
Unlike MLB players play for the money, fame, & worrying how much they get paid. (not to mention they almost went on strike)
It's similar to the time I told the legendary Sal Buscema I wanted to be a comic artist & told me to back out & find a better job, well i told that old @$%^$ that i would do it for the passion &teh love of makin comix that i was even willin to take a second job just to get in the biz.

Got problems - take em to the 120. ;)  Now you know I aint kidding ... :o

I really want to go to a Cyclones game! I think it's so ultimately cool that there is once again baseball in Brooklyn.

When the Cyclones play the SIankees for the first coupla
years they ran a ferry back and forth from SI to Coney Island.  The games were sold out though--first ever Ferry Series.

And its not AAA ball - its like single or AA - I forget which.

Cone retires - Franco reactivated and the Mutts still sux.
I suppose it WAS all Bobby  Valentine's fault after all. :P

i know it's pretty weird putting writing on a column that hasnt been touch for a year and a half. well 1 st off.

Today was such an awesome unbelievable game. The yanks were getting beat, in the 8th inning by the Twins 5-1 then bernie scores a run then after that Sierra hits a 3 run homer to tie the game. then we wait with anticicpation for the 11 inning when the yanks break the tie & & have to survive through one more half inning to win the game.

Time for the Bronx Bombers to face there oldest heated rivals The damn BoSox.  well here's a pic i did on photoshop to show what u can expect.

Look out Boston the ghost of the great Bambino is coming to get you yet Again.  Well I know for a fact Billy will agree with me 100% on this when i gotta say....
LET'S GO YANKEES!!! ;D
