Seems to have that Shi look to her. Could easily play into that half American, half Japanese role of Ana.

She has the look of Shi and would do a good job I think.

Even if she is not cast as Shi, she is certainly beautiful.

Who would be your choice J.C.? I think Jaymee is now the only correct choice.

However, I realize that the powers that be will decide that fate. But the world would be better off if they chose Jaymee as Shi.

It would certainly help my inner Chi if they picked Jaymee for Shi. 8)

Here full resume is posted on the other Jaymee Ong thread I've posted here. I will try posting it again.

http://www.chadwickmodels.com.au/AddModel.aspx?modelID=1065

On the Asian side of film she was cast by Jackie Chan for his film called Gen X Cops. She played Haze.

She was cast as a lead actress in Cats and Dogs.

She was cast as lead actress in Rave Fever which was another Asian film.

Had a cameo as a nurse in Pearl Harbor. What was humorous was the fact that her character's name was Jerry Bruckenhiemer which was the actual name of the producer who made the film.

Had a guest role on the television show Las Vegas doing a Chinese Dragon Dance and she also turned out to be a killer in that episode.

Was in Mark Wahlberg's HBO show called "Entourage".

Hey Billy,

You really need to look into a low sugar diet. ;D Only the fans of Shi have the right to be insane. ::) You have to maintain a well balanced, even keel, as you guide the ship called Shi................(don't make me sing it)

I sure hope you and Kevin get the script written. Do you get to tell the story your way now or are we still faced with the spectre (Hopefully not Phil Spectre) of Ghosts and Ghouls and the supernatural.

There was a movie called "Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai" that I really liked. It was very bizarre. But they set up each major conflict or scene by putting up quotes from the Hagakure (The Book of the Samurai)

In SHI:SENRYAKU BOOK III OF III there is a similar technique used in the telling of the story. I was hoping the Shi movie would kind of mirror the same  approach.

I also think Joe Jusko did the best cover art of Shi of all time on that book. Now Jaymee Ong could do that cover pose perfectly.

That is why she should be cast as Shi!

I think Billy sometimes gets silly and it's amusing to see him in such an hysterical tizzy. No dizzy blond, that Billy.

As for my thoughts regarding Jaymee Ong, they border on the exceptionally rude. Let's just say I feel this is beginning to resemble an Asian girl pinup gallery that has naught to do with comics, and that consistent posting and pimping of such pictures verges on the disrespectful since that's not what these forums are for nor what I come here to see. I also know that I'm not the only one to feel this way, and that at least one other member I've spoken with -- one who has actually worked with Ms. Ong in the past and whose name I'll omit for now -- is about to leave the forums altogether because of it. We'd appreciate it if such would be taken to PMs, at least.

My apologies for beasting in public, but both I and the other person have been getting increasingly offended and angry about this over the last year. I figured it was best to say something while I still have the restraint to be polite about it.

Hi Nishiko,

I appreciate your comments and concerns. I am somewhat mystified by how you could be a fan of Shi, a female comic book character that wears far less then Jaymee Ong in many of the comic book pages.

My posting of the picture was not trying to enrage you or cause you discomfort. I was merely promoting an actress that I thought made a good Shi. I stated my reasons why which can be read in a previous post on this thread. The picture of Jaymee was from a Maxim magazine which is a well known publication. Mandy Amano, a model that has posed for Shi has her pictures in Maxim as well. I won't post them because I am confident they will offend you also, but if you were to look at them, she has a likeness to Shi as well. I think that is why they used her for the artwork on Shi.

I can't speak for the others but I promise you that I won't post anymore pictures of any women at all. I will just use a link and give a warning if it has a woman in it. That way you won't see anything. You will notice on this thread that I used a link.  My final choice for the Shi role is Jaymee and I will stick with that.

I would be curious to know your choice for Shi? I won't try to argue with your choice. I am merely curious as to who you would like to see play the character of Shi. I would like to hear a woman's perspective on this.

Peace.

No hard feelings.

Get this straight right now: I have never read Shi for anything less than the story. If Billy hadn't done his research, I would have dismissed the book immediately as just another fanboy's attempt at a 'ninja chick with a sword' comic, regardless of how well it was drawn. Granted, the cover art caught my attention long enough for me to pick up the book and determine whether it was worth buying, but it always was, always has and always will be for the story that I continue to read Shi ten years after seeing that first issue.

However, if you want me to nitpick on Ana's appearance, very well:

1) Her boobs aren't D-cup-sized or larger, which are at once too heavy, impractical and improbable for a woman of her fitness level. Most artists tend to forget this.
2) Despite her usual outfit showing a fair amount of skin, she's always been decently covered (ie. no gratuitous male fanservice that I saw).
3) The outfit is such that she has total freedom of movement with very little aerodynamic drag and very little chance of any fabric snagging or being otherwise used against her during physical activity. Remember that there's armor beneath the fabric, and the glint of armor in the faintest light would immediately negate any advantage of stealth.
4) Ana knows Sunzi's discourse on war very well regarding using women to distract the enemy: all that skin is very effective at disrupting the concentration of an opponent who is less than absolutely focused on combat.
5) Last but far from least: Billy is the only artist I can currently think of who's succeeded at drawing his strong female protagonist in such a way that she's sexy without being slutty. The result was that the way she was drawn never bothered me, with the exception of occasionally wondering at her tolerance for colder temperatures since her body core is constantly exposed.

To address your question: how I feel doesn't have as much to do with how little the woman is wearing as much as it has to do with the fact that you've posted several women's pictures with variations of the same commentary every single time. To be honest, you've posted so many that I really don't have a valid reason to believe your latest choice is any more qualified for the role than the other women you've put up. This belief was made even more firm after speaking with the person who worked with Ms. Ong, who said, and I quote, '[A]lthough she was sweet enough, she certainly did not have the intelligence, grit or aura of danger that Shi should have.' We agreed that just because a woman looks the part doesn't mean she has the ability to do justice to the character, and the pictures you've been posting have been primarily those of models who are not necessarily athletes or skilled actresses. I'll grant you Ms. Ong is pretty and seems quite fit, but the only mention of any martial arts expertise was in that article you posted; her combat training, let alone what specific karate/TKD styles she trained in, is not listed anywhere on the fansites I visited. She honestly struck me as more of a recreational martial artist than a serious one, but that's my opinion.

Who I would choose for Shi is a trickier question. It's been Hollywood tradition to take an actor and try to train them to look enough like a martial artist to fool the ignorant masses rather than to take a martial artist and teach them how to act; after all, the actor's used to faking being someone else, so martial arts should theoretically be the same thing, right? *snort* And if not, that's why you have stunt/martial arts doubles to make them look good. From an acting standpoint, I would have to go with Kelly Hu: she has the necessary film and martial arts experience to make a decent go of it, and she was Billy's first choice for the role before someone decided the Asian Flavor of the Month would look better in the credits.

From a purely martial standpoint, it's harder to pick, but there are two names that particularly come to mind right now: June Castro and Diana Lee Inosanto (though to be honest I'd probably go with the latter).

June Castro has trained in Shaolin Kenpo Karate (in which she holds an eighth-degree black belt), Jeet Kune Do, Kung Fu, boxing, Silat, Brazilian jiujutsu, Muay Thai, and kickboxing; she is the daughter of Shaolin kenpo Great-Grandmaster Ralph Castro. She's quite petite, but an unholy terror in the ring and one of the world's most highly-ranked female martial artists.

Diana Lee Inosanto is the daughter of Dan Inosanto, who was one of Bruce Lee's personal students and who helped give Jeet Kune Do to the world; she was in fact named 'Diana Lee' in Bruce's honor as he was considered an honorary uncle. I have this issue of Black Belt Magazine where she's featured, and was extremely impressed with what I read. She's also an active member of the Lodestone Theatre Ensemble and continues to expand her acting skills (as listed here).

Despite my personal preferences, I remember that Billy currently does not have final say in casting choice, so nattering on about this or that person won't help. I can only hope the final decision will be a good one and I will do my best to support that choice -- though I'd rather Mimi's option ran out before that happened so this film can be done right. :P

In 3 yrs, someone may have studied once a month, once a week, an hr a day, or 6 hrs a day.

As you can see... saying some one has 3 yrs experience doesn't mean much.

Looks required is debatable. I think she is very hot. But I don't think you quite get what shoulders would look like if you trained regualarly w/ a naginata. Even if she just trained w/ a bo instead of a naginata she would have more muscle definition. Take a close look @ Nishi's example of Diane Ino. Those delts are more realistic as to what Shi's should look like.

Those of us who understand what a Sohei warrior could be, disagree.

Most importantly, mimi doesn't know we exist. Billy cares about the fans, mimi doesn't. Non-fans spend money just as much as fans. I ran a fan-run fan convention for a scifi show for 4yrs. The TV show's owners tried to derail us & shut us down for all 4yrs (despite the fact that we weren't profiting, nor did we ever intend to). One thing that the shows owners said to me in a phone conversation that I will never forget:
Quote
"While we appreciate our fans, we are not in the business to make fans, we are in the business to make money."

Diana's a very well-rounded martial artist herself: aside from Jeet Kune Do, she's also trained in Filipino kali, Pencak Silat, wushu, Thai boxing, shoot wrestling and Savate. She's definitely got the necessary weapons experience as well as the ability to learn more without looking contrived.

I also found a video montage on her site. Some of the bits are a little dark to see well, but it's pretty good. Click on the link 'Diana Lee Inosanto's demo' to see it: http://www.ronbalicki.com/dianainosanto/videoclips/video2.htm

As for what you said about Mimi not knowing/caring we exist, this is quite true. I did meet her at SDCC last year, but even though she took my tape of dojo performances, I doubt she remembers me, let alone kept the tape (which is a pity because I wanted it back).

That's what some college friends of mine said about why they read Playboy, because they felt Playboy had the much more in depth news article compared to Time and Newsweek.

Thanks for submitting your picks for Shi. Although it might seem unlikely they will be chosen, you can never tell. Richard Farnsworth was a stunt man for over 30 years and finally got his crack at acting. His first supporting role in "Comes a Horseman" earned him an Academy Award Nomination. He later got an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his performance in "The Straight Story". He should have won. He was robbed. He did win the Canadian equivalent of the Academy Award for "The Grey Fox" portraying the true historic character of Bill Miner who was known as "The Gentleman Bandit" because he coined the phrase, "Hands Up" when he was robbing stage coaches and trains. The term is still used by law enforcement today.

Delvie,
I doubt if you could find an actress that would even know what a Naginata is or a Shuriken? So I think your criticism of Jaymee on that issue is moot. As for the martial arts skills, Zhang Ziyi has none, but no woman has ever looked better performing them on screen. In fact she looks superior to most men and that includes so called professional martial artists like Jon Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, and Chuck Norris. I think her dance training has helped her immensely to look very controlled and graceful.

I will have to send Mimi a letter explaining why she needs to care. ;D
