I'm back. The QUIZ is all about educating Billy on his own drawings. A heart vs a coin on the necklace. That's a tough one. Went to the Columbus convention yesterday. It was great. I'll post a special thread on it later today.
BTW, Delvie, You got my quiz. So now we still have Billy's quiz outstanding about Sovereign Seven and Ana Ishikawa appearing there and Delvie's new quiz.

From Delvie,
Quiz #77: In most of Billy's renderings of Shi, her choker has either a cross or the Shi coin; however, in one picture, Billy draws her wearing a heart choker. Which picture is this?

If my answer to Delvie's question is correct, we are all caught up. QUIZ #78: Andy Lee did this drawing of SHI for me. What style of painting is this? It is very specific and it is fascinating to watch Andy paint. This is intended to have people get curious and find out more about Andy Lee and his art.

I figured my quiz would last longer than that.
Quiz #78: Cha'an Buddhist Splash Art
This quote comes directly from Andy Lee's sitehttp://www.findandy.comThe traditional Cha'an Buddhist splash style which originated in China, circa 13th century B.C. Emperor Cha'an ruled during this era, making this period the Cha'an Dynasty. The Emperor was very strict and domineering. He permitted only specific styles of art and literature to permeate throughout his country. Anything not approved was illegal. Linework was very tight and the spoken/written word was extremely structured.
Because of these strict regulations, there became a backlash of artistic expression. Buddhist monks who lived during these times used bamboo brush, sumi ink and rice paper to "meditate" with. They would splash paint onto the paper and interpret the splashes and wild strokes further by adding a few lines here and there to create a recognizable image. The monks were not prosecuted because the paintings were deemed religious tools. Chinese splash painting was invented this way.
Eventually, Buddhist missionaries migrated to Japan. Cha'an Buddhism became Zen Buddhism. The splash art style also transcended geographical boundaries as well. The Japanese popularized this way of painting. It was officially an artform and not just a religious practice anymore.
To paint in this way is to wander into the artists' own psyche. Any splash that is interpreted arguably reveals thoughts deeper with the artist, much like dreams are interpreted today. Rorscach Tests share similar methods of interpretation.

Delvie, You are correct! I encourage everyone to look at Andy's work. You will enjoy it. When you watch him paint, he uses all parts of his hands and elbows and forearms, etc. He gets into it.

& I have no idea why this wasn't made into a cover. It is one of the top 3 pics of Shi/Tomoe together(IMHO). Perhaps it could be the cover for 10th anniversary of Shi vs Tomoe? Speaking of which, Billy or JC... when can we hope to buy the 10th Anniversary WOTW #2?

I know I'm a couple of days late, but can I imput something about Andy Lee. He was across the aisle from Billy at Royalfest here in St. Louis. My son and I visited with him for a few minutes, then moved on to the next guest. Andy heard my son going on about how much he loves Transformers. He sat back and in about 3 minutes had splashed out a painting of Optimus Prime and presented it to my son at no charge. Andy is a real class act and I appreciate what he did.

That is a cool story! I remember you and your son. I was working the booth with Billy that day. There was a poet sitting there with Andy. It sounds like your son liked the painting.

Yep, that was us. My son loved the painting. The only reason he started talking so much was that the poet started talking to him. Preteen hormones kicked in and he just started blabbing away. It was nice to meet you as well that day.

I love Andy's work. I'd love to study "Cha'an Buddhist Splash Art" - Thanks Delvie for the name, someday. I had planned to illustrate the Prose Edition of "Senryaku" but Gary Cohn has yet to deliver any script. Sorry about that, I was really looking forward to it, but Gary's had a busy and trying year.
Anyhow, I really enjoyed myself at "Royal Fest" everyone was just terrrific, and Joe Snyder and I had a grand ole' time!
I also recieved an email from Sovereign Seven artist Dwayne Turner who'll check to see which issue he drew Shi in.

You are correct. I believe Gojira & Yoshi battle in WOTW#7 (maybe it's #8 )((not in town to double check)). It is also in Ill Warr'r #4. Here is the IllWarr'r pic: Here is the original pencils in my collection (DANKE BILLY): Interesting sidenote: A mispelling in google image search of "Gojiro" brings this cool pic by Stephan Youll: idea for a future Shi cover? ;)

We Holy Moly! I just recieved an email from Dwayne Turner and he thought it was #5. I was going to post it to let you all know, but Delvie sir, you are truly the man! I will get that sketch (and books) out to you as soon as I'm done with the pencils (still 10 pages have the flu and lost two days writing my version of a film treatment) along with yours, Joe's and everyone elses stuff. You don't have to get me anything from Cabellas, since I owe you, but if you're feeling generous I'll let you know! ;)
