I've seen other images from the sequence, and part of the story. The plane malfunctioned, but the pilot held it till he was sure that it would not hit the crowd, then punched out. I believe he did survive. Yup. He managed to stay in long enough to veer the aircraft away from a neighborhood & into neighboring trees.
