According to: http://www.santas.net/japanesechristmas.htmOnly 1 per cent of Japanese people believe in Christ. Even so, most Japanese people decorate their stores and homes with evergreens during Christmas.
They enjoy giving each other gifts, and this is the part they celebrate.
They have a Buddhist monk called Hotei-osho who acts like Santa Claus. He brings presents to each house and leaves them for the children. Some think he has eyes in the back of his head, so children try to behave like he is nearby.
Among the Christian Japanese Christmas is not a day for the family. They do not have turkey or plum pudding, rather than that the day is spent doing nice things for others especially those who are sick in hospitals.

.
Just a quick note. The japanese do recognize Santa Clause & the children call him Santa ni ojisan which means Uncle Santa.
52% of japanese recognize Christmas but as a secular holiday, so being christian makes no difference.
Hotei is one of the Shichi-Fukujin (7 gods of luck) The other gods are Benten (Goddess of Love), Bishamon (Enemy Basher), Daikoku (Wealth Counselling) Ebisu (God of Fishing), Fukurokuju (Health and Keep Fit), Jurojin (God of Longevity)
The huge Hotei is the only member of the shichifukujin based on a mortal; an eccentric Chinese Zen monk called Pu-tai and thought to be the reincarnation of the Buddhist saint Maitreya.
Hotei is a god of abundance. He is also the god of laughter and the happiness you can achieve by being satisfied with what you have. He is the god of joy and satisfaction in trade, hence a Hotei statue is often positioned at the entrance of stores.
He is depicted as a laughing man with a huge belly symbolising his benevolent soul. He carries a ceremonial fan (ogi) and he is never seen without his bulging cotton sack, stuffed full of goodies like toys, money, gold, drinks & anything else that makes up the good things in life. The bag is never exhausted so he can afford to be generous. He is always feeding the hungry. Sometimes he is shown sitting in a cart drawn by a few grateful children who have benefited from Hotei's altruism.

Mark is actualy having a devil of a time logging into the forum, but wants everyone to know he is still around and wants to post, but can't. Maybe his account is corrupted somehow.
