According to this link, http://japanese.about.com/library/weekly/aa121897.htmJapan has two type of mana characters: kanji, which are derived from Chinese characters which made their way to Japan via the Korean peninsula in the 5th century, and kana the phonetic simplifications combined in the written language. Japan, lacking a writing system prior to the arrival of kanji, has no historical records earlier than the 5th century. The development of kana was not instantaneous; it took quite awhile before kanji was modified leaving all early Japanese literature written in kanji. Two of the oldest written works in Japan are the Tennouki and the Teiki, which are thought to have been genealogical records of the extended Imperial family.

QUIZ #605:
At the end of KILL BILL #1, Lucy L. says "katana natana" which could be 1 or 2 words, I do not know. What does this mean? 'Hontou ni Hattori Hanzou katana natta n da.' -- hontou (ni): really, truly -- Hattori Hanzou: name of the swordsmith, also the name of the most famous ninja of Japan's feudal era -- katana: sword -- natta: was, became (also a host of other things depending on context) -- n da: the lone 'n' is short for either the noun or particle 'no', and 'da/desu' means 'is'. When 'no desu' (or, as in this case, 'n da') is used at the end of a sentence, it is suggestive of an explanation. This form is used primarily by women and children. *claims her No-Prize*
