So yeah. I took a wrong turn somewhere & ended up in Alaska. Weeee.

I'm in a town called Juno. Apparently, a long time ago the french showed up & said "je know... it's not proper to have a word w/ only 4 letters"

"hunh"

"oi"

"You must be kidding me"

"no"

So... now it's spelled J-u-n-e-a-u...

& that's just plain cheating @ scrabble.

Just a couple of FAQs from the Juneau travel guide:

Q: HOW CAN YOU SPOT AN ALASKAN?
A:
Their complexions are dewy & they squint when the sun comes out, followed by comments about the strange yellow ball in the sky.

Q: WHY DON'T LOCALS USE UMBRELLAS?
A:
Call it stubborness or being in denial, somehow the umbrella just never caught on here. People are drip-dry & umbrellas just can't take the wind that so often accompanies the rain; besides, umbrellas are for whimps.

Q: HOW HIGH IS JUNEAU?
A:
The ocean gives you a clue. High tide used to lap Franklin & Front street. Canoes were parked where people are walking now.

Q: DOES IT ALWAYS RAIN HERE?
A:
No. Sometimes it snows. Juneau gets about 150 inches of precipitation a year; we call it "liquid sunshine."

Q: WHAT TIME IS IT HERE?
A:
Alaska time. Things will get done, unless the sun is out or the fishing is exceptionally good.

Q: HOW MANY HOURS OF SUNLIGHT DO YOU HAVE?
A:
On Juneau's longest day, we have 18hrs & 18mins of daylight. On Juneau's shortest day, we have 6hrs & 22mins daylight, which means most working people don't get too much time outdoors.

I don't know if I'm automatically prone to being an or if it's just because I'm allergic to stupidty... but today I'm sure I made friends.
Well. I was visiting the Mendenhall Glacier today. (It's the 3rd glacier I've been to.) So anyway; after viewing & pondering for 30 mins, I made my way back the mile to the information center. As I was leaving the info center, I passed two apparent strangers. I heard one ask "Do you believe in god?" I heard the other reply. "Certainly. What else could have created something so incredible?" As I continued walking by I replied "Umm... Snow & gravity"  doh2

So, I learned a new lesson on Saturday.
If you're going to spend $200 on a new cell phone, don't keep it in a shirt pocket.   crossfingers Because when you go to bend over... in less time than it takes to have a nervous breakdown, afraid you'll Bush it.  & that I did.
In slow motion I watched the phone fall towards a puddle less than 1/4" deep. I almost managed to stop time & catch it, but the laws of physics had the one up on me & the new phone that I had for less than a month.... ...
STILL WORKED?!?                                    HOLY CANOLI!!!
It works!  bliss So I wiped the layer of moisture off & set it on the roof against the wall so any possible agua that might have stealthily invaded the inner sanctum of my beloved toy could drain out. 15 minutes later, I checked it out & it was working fine. So I shut it & stuck it back in my pocket (pant pocket this time). I would have bought a carrier for it, but the only phone case I could find @ the time looks just a little left of metro  elephant for my tastes. Anyway, I went to use my phone 10 mins later & oilah!

No picture on the screen!
WTF?!?

SO, for my friends that have been sending me text messages, sorry for no response. My phone says every 10 minutes Attention: Message so I clearly have them - I just can't view them. I can still make calls & receive calls, I just can't see to & from whom.

So... now, I need to find a new sidekick3 on the cheap.

The more expensive the phone, the more likely you are to lose it/break it/flush it/see it eaten by a hungry moose/throw it away/leave it in a flaming bag on a doorstep.

Warranty?

Sadly, no warranty. It's a $400-$500 phone ($200 if I were a new customer as opposed to a 7yr loyal customer) so I had to purchase it off of ebay instead of through t-mobile.

that is what we hate about being loyal customers to tmobile, they should offer deals to the loyal customers also!!

I feel Delvie's pain.  I was wading down a river taking pictures of the cascading water, the bluffs, people having fun in the water (this was the place where I just planted trees with my Scouts), when my ankle got twisted between two rocks and I fell backwards into the river.  I grabbed my camera and thrust it out of the water, then climbed back to the shore.  Things looked good, so I snapped off a couple more shots and called it a day.  When I tried turning the camera back on, it was totally dead.  When I had the film developed, the pictures came out kind of funny looking also.

OUCH! Did the camera ever work when it dried out?
Both my phone & my camera stopped working last week on my day off in Alaska. I went photowrangling & when I was @ the Mendenhall Glacier, they both finally quit. It only took about 3 hrs on the defroster for the phone to work again. The camera worked 3 days later.

A little back story on my phone. I've had it a month because my previous phone was a flip phone that the flip part wore out 3 months prior. I had to be extremely careful opening it or it would completely break. Then about 7 weeks before it's demise, it did completely break & my phone was nothing but a receiver & mouthpiece connected by w thin wire. Necessity required that I hold onto that phone until I could spend $500 on a Dash or a Sidekick3 or a Blackberry. The last month the screen went out & I was crippled. I could answer the phone & dial #s I knew in my head, but I couldn't see if I dialed a wrong # or who was calling me. Worst of all for me was the lack of text message. On an average month I send 1700 text & receive 1300. Nothing on the screen. When the opportunity for a buy-it-now Sidekick for $200 came along, I took it. 30 days later. I have no picture or words on the screen.  dunno

You'd be surprised how little that is.
A typical conversation could be 20 - 50
It's easier, most times. It's hard to talk on the phone & work @ the same time, where as, a quick 10 second type & then back to work until the reply.

There's some people (family) that I only talk to @ xmas, but we text eachother every few days. I have a friend in Indiana whose daughter died right before xmas. We've only spoken on the phone once in 20yrs, but we text every day. Especially, before my previous phone went wonky, we were gabbin' like lil girls via text.
