As some of you know, I was laid off back in Dec & sort of went off the radar a bit. I hate that my 1st post back isn't more positive, but here goes.
I only collect Shi because I'm an obsessive completist. I can't imagine spending the type of money on other characters that I do on Shi. But lately, money hasn't been the issue as much as the let downs associated w/ collecting Shi. 1st, we had all the solicited Shi specials that just never came out.
Then there was the drama associated w/ numerous variants produced by Avatar Press & Comcav which I didn't seem to mind near as much as a lot of my fellow collectors & Billy did.
Then there was a couple of crossovers that seemed to go smoothly.
Next was a crossover & variants that you/your comic shop couldn't order via previews & diamond. If you wanted them, they had to be purchased directly from the publishers website. Which was semi ok, but then I loaned out my copies to people whom had never seen them because they weren't released in a mass public manner. Now, I have to go back & reorder them on their web site because of damage & disappearance.
Now, there's the NEW drama from yet ANOTHER publisher. If you ordered KADE: Rising Son crossover w/ SHI in it, you might have gotten what you wanted. Myself, however, am yet again smattered in Shi Drama. KADE; Rising son was solicited w/ 2 covers. Cool. A Tucci & a Peacock. No major drama. Also, there's the dealer incentive cover- The Tucci pencil edition. In order to purchase one of these, the dealer had to order 10 copies of KADE: Rising Sun #1. My dealer informs me that they can probably sell 1 or 2, but more than that would be a waste of money for them. So I tell them "I'll buy what's left over, just place the order, please." I figure, 2 diffferent regular covers- I typically buy 2 over every Shi (1 for myself & 1 as an investment), so that leaves me w/ potentially 4 extra covers. No big loss. That's only $16. Instead, Arcana releases only Tucci. So now, I have 8 Tucci covers (of which I need 2) & NO Tucci Pencil edition. As soon as the Peacock cover is released, I'll surely be buying 2 more, as well. Total out of pocket @ that point will be $40 w/out the pencil covers. So now, I'm kinda wondering 2 questions:
- A) What kinda of ridiculous drama will be attached to the NEXT Shi crossover or release?
- B) For those who collect other series, is this the norm in comic industry where every charater collection is plagued w/ drama or do I just know how to pick em?
[/glow] PS. There's also the matter of numerous art transactions gone bad or uncompleted, but that's a seperate issue.

Unfortunately Delvie. It seems every book that rolls off the press has a min atleast 2 variants somewhere. Which really sucks for us completionists. They know they are out there and abuse it to the max to where we cant afford them anymore. Hence why i stopped collecting wolverine. Storyline was kinda sucking and they were depending on the art to keep it going. So now im down to just collecting artwork. Only real investment to carry with. And sorry bout the work thing. Everyone is getting hit everywhere with this. Lucky for me we already had a skeleton crew. So we just so far got nailed with no raises for this year. Keep crossing fingers everyday.

I myself just got tired of spending so much money on variants and things, so I cut back big time on buying things. Sometimes I would buy a comic for a second time without realizing it was a variant of a comic that I already had. I'm not into variants for the collectibility. As far as your text to me, the answer is NO. lol

I think the drama of collecting to be a completist was ended for me when the cost of the variants reached over $10 per cover. At that point, I decided that there was no difference in the inside story and art, and I could probably find a jpg of the variant somewhere on the web, and copy that to my computer. When the shop where I get my comics started to charge me for a copy of Previews (even though I regularly ordered a ton of material that they wouldn't normally carry), well that dropped the amount I spent on comics dramatically. Now that I am also unemployeed, it looks like I may be having to put some of my collection up for sale just to survive until a new job comes along. Good luck to all of the rest of you out there hunting for employment. I wish you well.

Why yes we did have fun at Nickelback and will post as soon as I download them to the comp. We were super close and if the people next to us weren't jaggers I could of walked down about 10 rows to get a pic of Shawn (however he spells it, the lead singer of Seether).

I think I have a sketch cover done on one of those Shooting Gallery covers somewhere. Now I've got to go and find where I put it.

You've actually got a hard to find sketch cover, then. I've been trying to find a blank one for years. Still looking for a couple more.
