Jaymee Ong is still the correct choice. The picture of Maggie Q. did not load, but I went and checked out some pictures on the internet. She is Eurasian, but not very attracitve. I would rather have your Shi model Mandy Amano over Maggie Q as being selected for the role if they chose somebody besides Jaymee.

There is an uproar amongst the Chinese & Japanese communities over the use of chinese actresses portraying geishas in the recent Memoirs movie. I will type the article from last weeks paper on it tomorrow.

I predicted that a long time ago, remember. Xhang Ziyi is so typically Chinese. There is even a term for her kind of look - "teochew face" - which is not very flattering. It was obvious she would not be accepted as a Japanese.
Worse still, with all the tension between China and Japan and the unresolved issues of Nanking and comfort women, both the Japanese and the Chinese would have issues with the choice of Chinese actresses portraying Japanese women. Even worse ... geishas! Oh the shame .. the shame!
Actually I am surprised that Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li agreed to act in this. Especially Gong Li. I bet she will be getting some flake back home. I've always liked her. Fantastic acting skills, talent, charisma, fire, passion, beauty and grace instead of the typical pin-up, lingerie bimbo. Hopefully China will not "bury" her after her choice to act in Memoirs.
I just love it when Western "experts" decide that they know better. A lesson here I think. And others who think they are experts on Asians, Asian culture and Asian women.

Actually, the chinese are pissed off because of a chinese actress simulating having sex w/ a Japanese man. They're talking about chopping Ziyi into 1,000 pieces. I don't know if that is a phrase I am not aware of or if they meant it like it was said.

To answer Scott's question:
Our Producer has four weeks to review and give us notes for the first set of revisions. Kevin and I are contracted to do two revisions. Kevin says she'd like to give us some more notes right away (a day or two worth of work) and that's included in the first draft.
Next she'll show it to a director and get, him "attached" get his notes and give those to us for the revisions. I would personally boost up the horror elements because female "comic book/action" films don't seem to do that well.
I'll probably be out in L.A. in January (that's a crazy month for me) and we'll have meetings.
Right now Ziyi is attached, but our Producer wants to make Ana biracial now to open up the part for more liberal "casting."
After you get a director and a star, the Producer will go to a studio for financing etc. If they give it a go (I think Dimension is really into it) then the process moves rather quickly.

Spoilsport!
Delvie, that's why I said the issue of comfort women. What did you think they used to do to Chinese women? They had to dress up like geishas to "serve" the Japanese during the war.
And yes, there are many colourful curses in Chinese. Like peeling your skin, drinking your blood and eating your flesh. Chopping into a thousand pieces is actually quite mild. LOL.

If I had to go to a back up plan if Jaymee Ong was not available I think I have found a competent replacement with some acting experience as well. This beast might just be the one to play Shi. !!!Warning!!! Pictures of an attractive woman, some in swimsuit. also Now she is half asian/half american. So if you want a more Asian looking picture check this out Anyway you can check her out at her official website http://www.dunnpub.com

Aside from my wife, I thought Catherine Zeta-Jones was the most gorgeous woman in the world. I stand corrected.

I'm confused. Why wasn't Anna going to be biracial in the first place in the movie? Isn't her mother a Catholic White American? Why weren't you going to make her the same way for the movie? And in regards to comments being made about people being angry or outraged due to portayals of characters being done by other cultures, it's been said time and time again, you cannot please all the people all the time. Even if this movie turns out to be a blockbuster film, there will always be at least one person who hated it. That's just the way things are. Accept it and move on. So, please Billy, would you mind filling me in on why you weren't going to make her two cultures obvious in the movie until the end?

Ana still is biracial in the movie I would imagine. It's just the actress isn't, but it doesn't really matter anyways. There is a big difference between acting, and being. As far as that article is concerned I could give a flying [foul mouthed word] what a bigot thinks from any country. They can pound sand all day for all I care. When they are all dead maybe their children will get along better from what they learned from witnessing, and listening to their parents hypocritical ridicule of others.

I have, but maybe I should clarify what I meant; I was wondering more as to why the actual actress wasn't going to be mixed. I figure, if it's obvious in the book, why not in the movie? So, it's not so much the character I was talking about, as the actual actress.
