I think it might be cool if independent comic companies produced a chess pieces. And the different boards could be made like in the Top Cow world, or Harris, and Crusade universe. Kinda like different venues for different battles, kinda like Street Fighter.
The chess pieces could have a universal holder to display if it is a rook, queen, King, castle, pond. So one can choose which characters can be used in any role of chess game play.
Like for example Shi and Arashi can be King and Queen and Witchblade and Darkness on the other side. And if you want to use Tomoe as a Rook or a Horse, just put on the universal holder displaying her role. Or if you wanted to use 8 Shi's as ponds. Even have them wearing different outfits/poses, so there could be a whole board of Shi's
Another silly fun idea,

it might make more sense to have Peter as the king & Arashi as the knight or something like that. But i'd buy it. ;) I suggested a Shi Chess set a couple of years ago to Billy but it never took. Last year I posted some of the board ideas. http://www.williamtucci.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Shi;action=display;num=1089067380

Those were awesome boards. :)
In regard to the universal holders, as in normal chess pieces, the importance of the piece the larger the size. The universal holders can be raised to the importance kinda like shoe heighteners or heels. And the holders would be in traditional Black and white colors.
And it would be fun to mix and match with other comic characters to have your own unique team.
It would also look great on coffee table next to the Shi art coffee book.

If one company could get the rights to do all the characters...that would make the dimensions of the figures and boards more universal, and let you mix and match.
Sounds like an idea for a major toy company or at least a respectable toy company.

Hey I love chess and would love to see that kind of a chess set. Somehow it needs to go from the talk stage to the workable stages. If nothing else one could do an electronic verson of it as a cool chess software. I got a copy of Star Wars Chess and that is real cool so do one like that centered around Shi or I guess in general superheros of all sorts. That is my two cents.

I love collecting Chess sets as well, although, my collection is rather meager. 13 to be exact. Some, I've made.
I started to make one for Shi, but got side tracked. Shi vs Tomoe action figure chess sets. All you need to do is start collecting action figures that can be converted into sohei I make their clothes.

Delvie I'd love to see some pic's of the farscape one that you made. I'm a huge farscapre fan........or was I also made a remote controlled DRD. Gave it away as a prize, though. Also made a Checker Set out of little DRDs. Lickie airbrushed the opposing side red to kinda mimic Talon's DRDs Gave that away, too.
Made a funny little model w/ a D'Argo figure. He loved it. D'argo was covered w/ Tribbles & they were piled all around him. It was titled "Whoops! Wrong Set!"I made Ginny a Zhaan Figure attached to 2 DRDs using them as Roller Skates. I was told that she took it to each convention for the next year & had it sitting on the signing table.

Delvie I'd love to see some pic's of the farscape one that you made. I'm a huge farscapre fan........or was Cali - you and my hubby must be from the same gene pool. He is a huge Farscape fan too. (and a big God of War fan) We actually met and got pictures with Virginia Hey and Gigi Edgley at a Con earlier this year in Orlando. Wayne Pygram was there too, but Billy only wanted pictures with the girls! Here are the pics with Gigi and Virginia. Julie Mac

Yup. A 4 season, + 2part 3hr movie flop.
Such a flop that fans raised well over $100,000 to air radio & tv commercials & newspaper ads around the world. The 3hr mini-series was produced as a result of fans campaign to bring back the show. There's buzz about an onscreen movie.

There was a Farscape panel at MegaCon back in February, and the cast members said that they had heard the rumors of an onscreen movie... but none of them have been approached yet. A movie would SO ROCK! Billy Mac

To answer your question. In comparison, Firefly & Witchblade were both canceled after only 1 season. Firefly movie has already been released & Witchblade will be released in 2009.
Farscape wasn't canceled because of money. It was canceled because of politics.
Less than a year before it was canceled, Bonnie Hammer, the President of the Sci Fi Channel had announced the unprecedented 2-year renewal of Farscape: “We are excited to renew our commitment to this smart, sexy, intelligent and fun series that rewrites the book on sci-fi entertainment. Farscape is not only the most ambitious original series on basic cable, we think it’s one of the best-written shows on television, period. It’s no wonder that it’s the top-rated series on SCI FI for three years running.” Just a month before it was canceled Sci Fi Channel had published a press release crediting its Sci Friday lineup of Stargate SG-1 AND Farscape with “leading the charge” to their best summer ever? After the final 2 season deal was negotiatied, scifi channel was sold to a European company that suddenly went bankrupt & was in turn aquired by another european company (Vivendi Entertainment) when Disney failed to meet the bid price. Vivendi tried to renegotiate the contract w/ JHC. A deal couldn't be met & the show was canceled. Scifi was ordered to put out a press statement by Vivendi about ratings loss & rising costs. The cancellation cover story of ratings being bad was debunked by research. Season 5 was also to cost less than season 4. According to Juliet Blake, the President of Jim Henson, TV, the price of Farscape’s episodes had increased primarily because the Sci Fi Channel had asked for additional airing rights, NOT because of any rising production costs.
Vivendi felt a wider audience could be reached by changing scifi altogether. Anyone who watches scifi channel can tell you that there are more horror films on then there are scifi & now there is even wrestling on the scifi channel.
Side note for anyone who cares. Farscape’s ratings average of 1.3 represented approximately 882,000 households in the summer of 2001 and 958,000 households in the summer of 2002 for an increase of approximately 76,000 households for season 4. Additionally, Farscape’s combined ratings average (i.e. the ratings average MOST likely to be used to set advertising rates) was 16-17% higher in the summer of cancellation than the previous year.
