THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

2.7.03
By Richard Dickson
Contributing sources: AICN

That noise you heard this morning was the sound of millions of voices suddenly crying out in terror and suddenly being silenced.

Ain't It Cool News today has a scoop from someone who attended the opening night of the ILM/Skywalker Sound tribute at the American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, and the news isn't good for those hoping not to be forever stuck with Greedo shooting first on DVD:

"Anyway, about the only major piece of info to come from this night may upset the purists. THERE WILL BE NO ORIGINAL VERSIONS ON DVD!!! Lucas flat out said that we won't see the originals on DVD and I'm guessing any format other than those it already exists, ie laserdisc and video.... Lucas feels the originals weren't complete so the special editions are the versions he intended to make 20 years ago."

That's nice, George, but they're not the versions most of us grew up on, and this is more of a rape of anyone's childhood than anything done in the prequels.

Here's hoping Lucas hears the voice of the fans who made it possible for him to go back and make "the versions he intended to make 20 years ago" and gives us the Star Wars that launched so many of our dreams.

If Greedo had SHOT FIRST

Ironic..isn't it? (just like at the finale of many a Kirby monster mag tale)

This. Makes. Me. So. Mental.

On the one hand, I really think Lucas is a humble genius. On the other, I want to punch him in the head. This is such a freakin' STOOOPID decision.

Makes those widescreen laserdiscs --now valuable Original First Editions, just that more rare and valuable.

Thanks, George.  KA-CHING!!!

JC, are you trying to save Latin at Crusade? ;)  Will you build an aquarium next? ;D

I've got my set on Laser disc, but believe they're Special Editons with better effects and sound.  I think they cam out in 94' or 95.  Gotta check.  I mostly watch "Empire."   Love the first (who doesn't) and can't stand those friggin muppets in the third.

I do believe that Mark Hamill is the most underated actor of all time.  Isn't it amazing how he transformed his looks from Episode 4 to 5?   Much harsher, dignified and wisoned.  By Golly, this man's    the forgotten DeNiro.

Billy, methinks that the brutal car crash that Hammil was in between the making of SW Prime AND Empire had a lot to do with his "New Look" sadly. :o

The 94 & 95 reissues may be the Special Editions on Laser as opposed to the earlier "Originals"///dunno
only have SW77 on LD/

Robiesan is correct.

Mark Hamill, who played the eldest son in the Eight Is Enough TV movie/pilot, was convinced to sign up for the series because everyone "knew" Star Wars wasn't going anywhere.

Then he had the wreck.

End of TV series for him.

So the Wompa Ice Creature whacked him before we got a good look at him in Empire.

That's how the look came about, if I remember correctly.

This is not to say he's not a good actor. I think he's probably suffered from the Star Wars thing more than anyone else from the main cast... and the resulting (or seemingly resulting) desperation has positioned him to make some stupid choices when we was offered work.

On the other hand, what an excellent voice actor! The Joker would not have been the same without him.

Regardless of Mr Hammil's subsequent acting career, he  blazes forever in the universe as an immortal who
realized the naive farm boy with a destiny in all of us.

Luke Skywalker - you're A Number One - the Duke of New York in my book! ;D
